MakeMKV
Publisher's description:
MakeMKV 1.01 Build 650 Beta
The MakeMKV application was designed to be your one-click solution to convert video that you own into free and patents-unencumbered format that can be played everywhere. MakeMKV is a format converter, otherwise called "transcoder".
The only thing it does (and does well) - it converts the video clips from proprietary (and usually encrypted) disc into a set of MKV files, preserving most information but not changing it in any way. The MKV format can store multiple video/audio tracks with all meta-information and preserve chapters.
There are many players that can play MKV files nearly on all platforms, and there are tools to convert MKV files to many formats, including DVD and Blu-ray discs.
NOTE: All features (including Blu-ray decryption and processing) are free during BETA.
MKV stands for "Matroska Video". Matroska is a container file format, capable of holding unlimited number of video, audio and subtitile tracks, along with any metadata. Practically this means that it is possible to put entire movie with multiple sound and subtitle tracks, chapters information and movie thumbnail into single file. Being open and patent-free Matroska gained broad support recently and quickly becomes de-facto standard for storing movies.
Generally, MakeMKV can process DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray disks. DVD is fully supported with support for non-matching regions and ability to process disks with "structure copy protection". You should be able to just open any DVD disk and get a set of MKV files with all video, audio, subtitles streams and chapter information preserved. You shouldn't need any additional software to decrypt DVD files or remove region coding - MakeMKV will do everything.
HD-DVD support is limited and is likely to stay this way since HD-DVD lost the format war. Only "HD-DVD Advanced VTS" disks are supported. All video codecs (MPEG2/MPEG4/VC-1) and major audio HD codecs (E-AC3 and DTS-HD) are supported. Blu-ray disks are fully supported.
Here are some key features of "MakeMKV":
