AutoImageSize resizes images using 16 different resampling filters and 4 different aspect ratio guides.

What's the big deal about caching? Caching means that AIS only needs to resize an image once when the first request for an image happens.

AIS then reuses the already-resized copy for all subsequent requests for the same image as long as the same resizing parameters (width, height, quality, etc.) are specified.

This means you can use slower, higher-quality filters and support more client image requests since you don't have to resize the image over and over for each and every request.
