Fight Night Round 4 for Symbian Publisher's description
Much as boxing may just seem like two people thumping chunks out of each other for a while, with the threat of permanent brain damage never too far away, it’s obviously a lot more technical than that
Much as boxing may just seem like two people thumping chunks out of each other for a while, with the threat of permanent brain damage never too far away, it’s obviously a lot more technical than that.
If you’re after a boxing game that packs in all the action with none of the thought, you maybe better off looking elsewhere for your sporting fix. The rest of us are in for a treat with Fight Night Round 4 though.
It’s a boxing game that tries to include as much strategy, timing and consideration as it can fit on the small screen. Taking into account the size’s of mobile’s keypad, Fight Night Round 4 does a great job of creating a convincing boxing experience.
Although the game’s rendered in 3D, you actually play across a 2D plane, leaving every button apart from 2 and 4, which are used to move around, to control your fighter's stance and fists. You can move your gloves up and down to deflect your opponent’s different types of attack, give several kinds of quick attack yourself or one of four heavy attacks.
The key to beating your opponent is in finding a gap in his defences and exploiting it. Just thump away at him while he’s got his defences up and you won’t make much of an impact. Land an uppercut when your opponent’s caught unawares and he’ll feel it. Quite a lot.
However, Fight Night Round 4 doesn’t go in for quickie knock out matches – or at least it’s not something we managed to pull of – with fights lasting at least a handful of minutes, but the solid mechanics keep you involved. It’s just a pity that the fighters don’t look a bit more diverse. Each time you step into the ring, it’s against someone that looks quite a lot like you, albeit possibly with a slightly different skin tone and differently-coloured shorts.
We’re not expecting wrestling–style histrionics, but we’re sure that not every boxer in the real world looks exactly alike, even if they’re not going to be witty dinner party guests. It's partly excused by the fact that the boxers looks great, moving fluidly and sporting impressively detailed textures. Still, great graphics aside, Fight Night Round 4’s real assets aren’t in its looks.
The career mode lets you build up your fighter’s stats, fight by fight and point by point, adding a Rocky-style narrative to tie together the actual bouts. Not much has changed since the last mobile Fight Night outing, but considering Fight Night Round 3 was one of the best boxing games we’d seen on mobile, this is no real criticism. If you’ve not already got that game on your mobile, Fight Night 4’s a knockout.
