GVoiceA - Better Google Voice for Android Publisher's description
GVoiceA is an application that connects your Android phone or tablet to your Google Voice account
GVoiceA is an application that connects your Android phone or tablet to your Google Voice account.
The first thing you might wonder, is why do you need another one of those? That's a great question to ask while you're
looking at this.
So, to answer that, I'm going to tell you what GVoiceA does and doesn't do.
GVoiceA does provide an interface designed specifically for tablets - built originally on the HP TouchPad, under webOS -
that has seen nearly 6 months of use by thousands of tablet users, and even hundreds of phone users.
GVoiceA is primarily built as a SMS text-messaging application, for which it continuously receives high regards amongst it's users.
While it does have the ability to place calls using the standard Google Voice call forwarding schemes, that
is not it's primary purpose.
In addition to the standard GVoice functions of Texting and Forwarding Phone Calls around, GVoice also adds the ability to queue messages that are entered into it while offline for later delivery.
Quickly and easily navigate to any of the various message boxes that Google Voice provides-- all 12 of them -- and choose a range of messages to see, even going years back, if you would like, without having to scroll to the bottom of the list and get it to continuously load 10 more items every time it reaches the bottom.
Quickly search your entire Google Voice archive, by tapping the "Search" box above the list of messages, and entering in a search term. Pages containing all messages that contain that search term will appear.
GVoiceA does not provide an interface that is obviously just a telephone sized old-school list re-scaled to fit your tablet. It does provide a modern touch-screen, tablet-scaled interface.
Virtually anything that you see on your screen with GVoiceA running can be either tapped or held (long pressed) to generate some kind of an action.
When there's a message in the default Overview display, just tap it to bring up a menu of things you can do with / to that particular message. Same thing goes for your contacts, and virtually everything else on the display.
GVoiceA does NOT provide a way to make telephone calls via WiFi for free. If you need to be able to do that, go look up GrooVeIP, or the other app called "GVoice", or grab any of the seemingly dozens of apps that allow you to use Google Talk Voice Calling from your Android device. (This GVoice app existed on webOS before GVoice did on Android, as far as
I've been able to tell)
GVoiceA is not the most beautiful Google Voice app in the world, nor does it have every possible feature that anyone could think of, but it does provide a great interface to the service, and is regularly updated with improvements.
There are some features available in other versions of GVoice that have not yet made it to the Android GVoiceA, but these will be included as soon as the code details for making them work on Android are worked out:
- Listen to voicemails on device
- Popup notifications of new incoming messages (for the moment you can use some other app such as "Google Voice Notifications" for that)
