mac default iconiWeb Buddy for Mac Publisher's description

An extension to Apple's popular iWeb application that lets you manage multiple domains, RSS feeds, etc

iWeb Buddy is an extension to Apple's popular iWeb application. Where iWeb leaves off, iWeb Buddy starts.

iWeb Buddy is designed to compliment iWeb 2008. If your website needs the additional if statistics tracking, some custom HTML, or even links to social bookmarking sites, iWeb Buddy is the utility that can help.

iWeb Buddy fits into the normal workflow of using iWeb by adding one additional step. Generally, there are two workflows when using iWeb depending on where you are publishing your site to:

Publishing to .Mac

If you are publishing to .Mac then your workflow is normally pretty simple. You hit the publish button in iWeb and wait for it to finish. In this situation, after you have finished publishing your website in iWeb then you will need to open iWeb Buddy, select the site(s) that you published with iWeb and select process from the menu or toolbar.

iWeb Buddy will then add or alter the HTML in the pages on .Mac with the settings you have previously set in iWeb Buddy. If you have only updated a few pages in iWeb you can select just those pages to process to speed things up.

Publishing to your own server

If you host your website on your own server then you already know that the publication workflow is a bit more complicated. Normally you publish your pages to a folder in your home directory and then copy those folders to your server using a tool like Transmit. Similar to the .Mac publishing above, iWeb Buddy adds one additional step to this process.

After iWeb has created (or recreated) all of the files in your home directory, you will need to fire up iWeb Buddy and have it process the entire Domain. The reason that the entire Domain needs to be processed is because iWeb will re-write every file for the domain even if you only changed just one. Therefore to insure that every file has been updated, it is always best to let iWeb Buddy process the entire Domain before copying it to your server.

Here are some key features of "iWeb Buddy":

В· Multiple Domains

iWeb offers the ability to add as many sites as you want but it does not offer a way to separate these sites into their own "domains". Therefore if you have one site you wish to publish to .mac and another you want to host on your own server you are limited to publishing both to .mac and then moving one of them back. However, iWeb Buddy allows you to have as many "Domain" files as you want. You can now organize your websites any way that you wish!

В· Analytics and Web Statistics

For each Domain referenced in iWeb Buddy you can configure it to use Google Analytics and/or Mint. Configuring these services in iWeb Buddy will automatically inject the proper HTML code into each page in that Domain to allow it to be tracked.

Want to use another tracking service? iWeb Buddy lets you set up any custom scripting to be injected into the portion of each page.

В· RSS Feeds

iWeb only puts the RSS feed links on the top page of each blog and/or podcast. Unfortunately this makes it very hard for your site visitors to find the feed and add it to their feed tracker. In addition, these rss feeds do not have any statistical tracking attached to them.

iWeb Buddy solves both of these issues. First, iWeb Buddy will go into each entry of the blog and/or podcast and add the appropriate rss feed links so that no matter where in your blog your readers are they can link to your feed. iWeb Buddy will also redirect these links to your preferred feed tracking site like Feed Burner. This will allow you to follow all of the traffic that your blog or podcast is generating.

В· Social Bookmarking

Want people to be able to link your blog posts or podcasts to Digg? Perhaps you want people to easily link back to your site from Google or del.icio.us?

iWeb Buddy makes this easy. By selecting the desired Social Bookmarking site in the blog preferences, iWeb Buddy will automatically add these links to each blog entry.
