I/O transfers are quite time consuming due to which most of the program writers try to create some intermediate files or else intermediate database tables for storing the bulk amount of data in the temp table space and continue to work in deriving the calculations on the particular data that is to be processed by the various software programs. The fio 1.58 has the powerful engines that are made available in four different types. It also has got the I/O priorities that make it quite comfortable to work on the Linux kernels. This software will work equally effective on both block devices that transfer the data in blocks and on files.

Also this software will accept the job descriptions that are sent by the individuals using this software and then start processing them and completing the tasks that are assigned to it. Also you need not have to worry about the format in which you should supply the job description as this software can understand even the simple text format that might not have any XML or any other tag type information identifying the various activities to be done. It has got the complete set of features that will let you relax on your back once you try this.

fio is an I/O tool meant to be used both for benchmark and stress/hardware verification.

fio is an I/O tool meant to be used both for benchmark and stress/hardware verification.

fio project has support for 4 different types of I/O engines (sync, mmap, libaio, posixaio), I/O priorities (for newer Linux kernels), rate I/O, forked or threaded jobs, and much more. It can work on block devices as well as files.

fio accepts job descriptions in a simple-to-understand text format. Several example job files are included. fio displays all sorts of I/O performance information, such as completion and submission latencies (avg/mean/deviation), bandwidth stats, cpu and disk utilization, and more.

$ fio

-s IO is sequential
-b block size in KiB for each io
-t Runtime in seconds
-r For random io, sequence must be repeatable
-R If one thread fails to meet rate, quit all
-o Use direct IO is 1, buffered if 0
-l Generate per-job latency logs
-w Generate per-job bandwidth logs
-f Read for job descriptions

Examples using a job file:

A sample job file doing the same as above would look like this:

And fio would be invoked as:

$ fio -o1 -s -f file_with_above

The second example would look like this:

And fio would be invoked as:

$ fio -o0 -s -b4096 -f file_with_above

'global' is a reserved keyword. When used as the filename, it sets the default options for the threads following that section. It is possible to have more than one global section in the file, as it only affects subsequent jobs.

What's New in This Release:

В· A new offset_increment option to more easily be able to have different threads use different regions of a file/device.
В· A new buffer_compression_percentage option enabling the user to specify the compression ratio to expect from the data written by fio.
В· A fix for a segfault caused by invalid verification job files.
В· A few client/server bugfixes.
В· A fix for a bug that caused early termination of fio with verify_backlog.
В· A fix for a problem with iodepth_batch_complete=0 and accounting.
В· Enables read/write sequential offset to be a non-multiple of the block size.

System Requirements:

No special requirements.
Program Release Status: Minor Update
Program Install Support: Install and Uninstall
