Newrez is a nautilus script that not only makes it easy to change screen resolution on the fly, it lets you specify a resolution higher than your display's physical dimensions! This means that a netbook with a screen that's 1024x600 can display a scaled 1280x800 or higher (limited only by your eyesight :-)
Newrez does NOT "over-drive" the actual hardware. Instead, it builds a higher-resolution image in a buffer which is then scaled to fit the physical screen.
You are not constrained to "standard" resolutions. If 1280 seems too small, try something else. For example, "1111" will cause the script to set the resolution (at least on my netbook) to 1105x648.
What's New in This Release:В· Newrez 0.8 is not actually an update. When you unpack this version, you will also get a script "newrez-v" which is an entirely different approach. For those who cannot run newrez due to driver issues, or because the latest Xrandr package traps the mouse in a small rectangle (like my system), here is a solution while we wait for these things to get fixed!
В· Newrez-v is a VERY simple work-around. Instead of creating a larger display in a framnebuffer and displaying a scaled version, newrez-v starts a vncserver at a higher resolution and then starts a vncviewer in scaled mode. Not as elegant, not as fast, but will work on ALL systems.
В· At this "release" (call it 0.000001) it must be run from a command line, as a regular user. Edit the line that begins "vncserver" to change resolution.
