HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL5 x64

The UPD version 5.0 is the latest version of HP's Universal Print Driver. Please review the entire Readme documentation for information on issues resolved, performance improvements, and new behavior changes to the UPD.

New Features 5.0

For complete details of new and existing UPD features and management, please reference the UPD System Administrator's Guide.

Global Policy Enablement via Install.exe: New install.exe switches enable MPA/AD policy for all users that log into a system

Create / Delete / Modify shortcuts via Driver Configuration Utility: Using the Driver Configuration Utility (DCU) and the Driver Deployment Utility (DDU) administrators can pre-configure the driver before installation to customize printing shortcuts presented in the driver user interface. This includes option to remove HP product default shortcuts (except the "Factory Default") and creation of administrator defined shortcuts. Shortcuts defined through pre-configuration will become the defaults after driver installation.

Recognize user-defined media types via Web Jetadmin: Administrators can define five custom media types for use by UPD when defined using HP Web Jetadmin v10.1 or higher.

Username watermark: Watermark selection called [User Name] added to the existing list of available UPD watermarks selections list. The user's name retrieved from the printing host at time of FILE-PRINT becomes the text for the watermark.

HP EasyColor technology (PCL6 only): HP technology analyses each section of the print document and chooses the right enhancements eliminating the need to make manual adjustments. This technology allows for great color prints and better print performance with one easy to define setting.

Tower Tray support added: Tower trays are viewable through the user interface and available for printing.

UPD version control via INSTALL.EXE: UPD version specific installation allows multiple versions of the UPD to be installed on the same system (i.e- UPD v4.5, UPD v4.7 and UPD v5.0). Beginning with UPD v4.7 a traditional mode installation of the UPD driver using Add Printer Wizard allowed two different installation paths, each installing the same version of the driver. Selecting "HP Universal Printing" would upgrade all queues utilizing the UPD to the version being installed. Selecting "HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (vX.Y)" created a version specific instance of the UPD without upgrading existing UPD queues. Beginning with UPD v5.0, version specific UPD installation is added to the INSTALL.EXE options as a command line option using the /m switch. The /m switch only applies to traditional mode driver installation, therefore the /sm switch is required and supports only IP address or host.

Example:
install /m"HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v5.0)" /sm10.1.1.200

Form to tray assignments are retained through upgrade

Enable Printing to UPD Unsupported Devices: HP UPD 5.0 allows for printing to unsupported or non-HP devices by default. Please reference the UPD System Administrator Guide for full details.

Removed "User Guide" Printing Shortcut: New installations will not receive User Guide printing shortcuts. Default upgrades will retain the User Guide shortcut.

Performance improvements for PCL6 through Delta Row Compression and JPEG "pass through": When driver is pointing to a device that supports PCL6 version 2.1 or greater, delta row compression will be turned on otherwise it will be turned off.

Print Grayscale to PS: The feature to "Print in Grayscale" to a color device is not available in the UPD v4.7.x postscript driver that was preconfigured manually with the setting "Printer Auto-Configuration= Disabled" using the Driver Configuration Utility. Symptoms in UPD v4.7x include:

* "Installable Options\Device Typev is missing for UPD PS driver
* Color tab is missing. Result is unable to select "Print in Grayscale" to an HP color device

This feature has been added to UPD v5.0 postscript driver.

1. Using the Device Configuration Utility (DCU) set "Device Settings\Printer Auto Configuration= Disabled" to turn off bidirectional communication between the UPD driver and device.
2. Install the UPD 5.x PS driver, traditional mode.
3. In the driver user interface "Printing Properties\Device Settings\Installable Options\Device Typev tree node has the following selections: COLOR-MONO-AUTODETECT. AUTODETECT will be default.
4. DEVICE TYPE behaviors when Printer Auto Configuration=Disabled:
o If "Installable Options\Device Type=MONOCHROME" or "AUTODETECT" and the UPD is pointing to a color device, the COLOR tab will not be presented in the UPD driver which prevents selection of "Print in Grayscale." Because the UPD PS driver always sends color data to the device regardless if the device is monochrome or color, the UPD will always print color output to color devices.
o If "Installable Options\Device Type=COLOR" and the UPD is pointing to a color device, the COLOR tab will be presented in the UPD driver which allows selection of "Print in Grayscale." Selection of "Print in Grayscale" will print monochrome output; unselected will print color output.

FAQ:
1) When "Printer Auto-Configuration" is disabled, how do I "Print in Grayscale" using UPD 4.x?
This functionality was first made available in the UPD v5.0

2) How do I print Grayscale using UPD v5.0?
The Grayscale option will become visible on the Color Tab when the following settings exist:
a) Printer Auto-Configuration=Enabled, the UPD driver Device Settings tab Device Type=Auto Detect, pointing to a color device.
b) Printer Auto-Configuration=Enabled, the UPD driver Device Settings tab Device Type=Color, pointing to a color device.
c) Printer Auto-Configuration=Disabled, the UPD driver Device Settings tab Device Type=Color, pointing to a color device.

Issues Resolved

Key issues resolved in this public available release.

CR#3905: Word document which contains a mixture of portrait and landscape pages. When the user selects "booklet" output, the data in the tables on the landscape pages is missing.

CR#3896: Gray backgrounds printed with gif images in Hongul Word Processor 2005 or 2007

CR#433: Enabling "Print Document On", spoolsv.exe spikes CPU to 100% during printing

CR#2353: UPD PCL6 - Office Watermark with Semi-Transparence shows missing characters

CR#3086: PCL6 Booklet printing does not print in correct order when document contains both Portrait and Landscape pages

CR#3180: Disable Search for Network Printers from either AD templates, MPA, or from the registry, the link to Enter a printer address is still visable

CR#3260: Fold and Stitch, Booklet printing - requesting different media for first page results in that media being placed in the center of document and not the outer cover

CR#3446: UPD defaults to LPT1 when preconfiguring Printer Automatic Configuration with Driver Configuration Utility=Off

CR#3450: Enable Active Directory Policy registry setting not utilized

CR#2444: UPD cause non-English AIO device to reboot

CR#2629: Preconfigure "two sided printing=on" and locked user could still toggle setting in driver

CR#2664: Spooler crashes with PCL 5 printing with Crystal Reports

CR#2716: When installing UPD, Print Processor reverts from WinPrint to HP Print Processor

CR#2755: Slow printing and very large spool file sizes (400 MB +) when printing from Excel

CR#CR 2083/2295: Installation delay up to 10 minutes where the user did not have Admin rights during installation of UPD driver. For non Admin users (ie Print Operators group) the CIOUM MSI will not be launched during installation preventing automatic printer configuration.

CR#3082: Duplex enabled with mixed media prints only first media type selected

CR#2753 UPD Discovery/Communication problems to 500x Jetdirect printers on port 2 or 3

CR#3093 Large Spool Files / Slow Printing UPD 4.5 / 4.7 PCL5 Win2k client / Server 2003 (PCL6 only)

CR#3132 Custom Paper Size using Hagaki Japanese Postcard dimensions (100x148) resolved

CR#753: Impacting Citrix installation, the msiexec.exe installer was launched for every printer that is auto created resulting in a processor spike in MSIEXEC. This issue has been resolved.

CR#867 Citrix StressPrinters: Depending upon test setup with the HP UPD, Citrix StressPrinters tool set to default LPT port will take approximately 50 seconds per queue for autocreation. This is not considered a valid performance test case for UPD in the Citrix environment because Citrix environments will not have direct-connect printers on the Citrix server. Proper setup of the test tool provides accurate presentation of the UPD in traditional production environments. Guidelines below.

StressPrinters Performance Testing Guidelines for HP UPD:

1. Upgrade to 4.7.0 or higher. Previous versions had a defect that creating CPU spikes in the MSIEXEC.EXE which would decrease performance timings.
2. StressPrinters settings: change the default LPT1 port to a Citrix autocreated "Client" port. Citrix created ports will be redirected to the networked printer or to the client.
3. StressPrinters run on a Citrix server will show Citrix autocreated client ports from inside StressPrinters. If StressPrinters run on an XP client machine there will not be any Citrix autocreated ports.

CR#2384 Default paper size for French Canadian set to Letter, not A4

CR#2501 UPD 4.5 does not support job storage on LJ3700

CR#2717 Excel files will not scale to fit page as expected

CR#2422 Custom paper size Save behavior inconsistent for non Administrator user

CR#2682 Printing causes an application crash when Novell username includes a dot (.) character.

CR#2833: CreateProcess inherits handles from HPMUPxxx.BIN after spooler restart preventing application closure (ie HPMUP084.bin; HPMUP083.bin)

CR#2769: Vista 32bit, protected mode off, Dynamic mode, cancel print fails. This issue was related to MPA or ADS policy enabled and the Enterprise Auto Configuration had been turned off via driver preconfiguration.

CR#3422 Slow performance opening UPD user interface
Users with Administrator login utilizing a Point and Print connection from client to server opens either the Printing Preferences or Printer Properties and experiences long delays. Longer delays are experienced in cluster environments than compared to non clustered servers.

Resolution implemented in UPD v5.0 was a change the current watermark management behavior and benefits environments regardless of Watermark feature use. Watermark settings for users with Administrator rights to the server cannot be changed over a Point and Print connection. This change applies only to new watermarks creation or editing existing watermarks and will not impact other features available for management over Point and Print connections.

Beginning with UPD 5.0, when an Administrator level user makes changes to watermark via the UPD over a Point and Print connection the changes will be written to the client host system registry and not the print server's registry. This behavior will match users without Administrator credentials. This option does not apply to cluster server.

Upgrading from previous versions of UPD to UPD 5.0 or higher will receive this change.

With this change comes new steps to create new or edit existing Watermarks on the Point and Print server:

1. Standard Server Environment users with Administrator rights on the server can create or modify watermarks directly on the print server from the print server console or remote desktop to print server.

2. Standard and Cluster server environments with Administrator rights on the sever can change a registry value on the server to enable Watermark management over the Point and Print connection from client host to print. For cluster server environments this will be the only method for Administrators to manage or create new watermarks on the server. The recommendation is enable the registry setting to make server required changes to Watermarks and change the setting back to the UPD 5.0 installation default to obtain the performance benefits.

Enabling this functionality will create slower performance in the UPD's user interface when accessing Print Properties or Printing Preferences and will result in performance that matches UPD v4x implementation.

Print server registry key: UsePointAndPrintPerformanceFix

When the value is set to numeric value ZERO the UPD will revert to UPD v4.x functionality. The Administrator rights user to the server will be able to manage server defined watermarks over a Point and Print connection through the UPD driver user interface.

Known Issues This Release
#4303 Program Compatibility Assistant Error following installation on Vista "Program might not have installed correctly- if this program didn't install correctly, try reinstalling...". This error can also be reproduced using UPD's installation command line install.exe /? which only displays the UPD help dialogue. Vista recognizes the UPD installer as a legacy installation program and warns it does not have a method to verify correct installation. Select "This program installed correctly" #4304 Dynamic mode displays twiceThe dynamic UI starts to query for device information and another instance of the dynamic UI might display. To resolve hit Cancel of second displayed instance. #4294 Preconfigure Job Storage disabled for UPD dynamic mode does not work

Steps:

* Preconfigure PCL6 UPD to disable Job Storage using Driver Configuration Utility (DCU) v1.0.0.38
* DCU → Device Settings tab → Job Storage = Disabled
* DCU → Device Settings tab → Printer Auto-Configuration = Enabled (Driver Pre-configuration takes priority)
* Install driver in dynamic mode (does not apply to traditional mode)
* Open Print Preferences UI (select a device that does support job storage). Job Storage tab remains enabled.

It is highly recommended to always use the most recent driver version available.

Do not forget to check with our site as often as possible in order to stay updated on the latest drivers, software and games.

Try to set a system restore point before installing a device driver. This will help if you installed a wrong driver. Problems can arise when your hardware device is too old or not supported any longer.
