BIOS update utility - ThinkPad R500

This BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller (EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following systems:
- ThinkPad R500

The following operating systems are supported:
- Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit (*1)
- Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional)

Notes:.
*1: If Windows Vista 64-bit is already installed on your system, then you must use the bootable CD ISO format of this BIOS update.
*2: This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

* (New) Added PCI Express Power Management disabling capability in BIOS setup.
* (New) Added support for MRC 2.5
* (New) Updated LENOVO and Phoenix copyright year to 2009.
* (New) Applied recent modification of the SMBIOS DDR3 memory information specification.
* (Fix) Fixed an issue where some CardBus devices might have slow performance.
* (Fix) Fixed an issue where a 0191 error occurred at boot if the supervisor password was installed in the computer and when the BIOS update was done on the computer without entering the supervisor password.
* (Fix) Fixed an issue where a blue screen error appeared when DOS full screen was opened after resuming normal operation from standby state.
* (Fix) Fixed an issue that could not select Digital Display(DVI) from Boot Display Device of Display of Config in BIOS Setup (Integrated graphics models only).
* (Fix) Fixed an issue that might change the CPU usage of system process after attached to the Docking Station.
* (Fix) Fixed an issue that might have blank screen at boot (Intel Celeron Processor models only).
* (Fix) Fixed unnecessary resource claiming for the TPM 1.2

* (Fix) SATA controller mode can not be changed via WMI script.
* (Fix) (On Windows Vista) The computer with the Smart Card Reader resumes normal operation immediately after going into sleep mode at critical low battery state.
* (Fix) (On Windows XP) The computer (ATI graphics model) may switch the display to incorrect display device(s) after docked/undocked to/from the Docking Station at standby mode.
* (Fix) The computer may hang with blue screen if a setting of Advanced options of Power Manager is changed (for example, the CD-ROM speed setting).

* (Fix) The external display may have blank screen when the computer is attached to the Docking Station with the LCD closed and then is powered on.

* (Fix) System may not boot from USB Floppy Disk Drive.
* (Fix) CPU frequency in BIOS setup menu may be incorrect.
* (Fix) Wrong messages are displayed during diagnostics mode boot set from BIOS Setup/Startup.

* (Fix) Even Modem device is disabled by BIOS Setup, Modem may appear Device Manager after reboot system.
* (Fix) Error may occur resuming from Hibernation.
* (Fix) System can not boot from CD-ROM without internal HDD.
* (Fix) System may hang after graphics mode changing and reboot.

Version 1.09-1.01

* (New) Initial release for ThinkPad R500.

Notes

* This package does not work on Windows Vista 64-bit systems. Use the BIOS Update CD for BIOS updates for Windows Vista 64-bit systems.
* If you use Windows Vista, before applying this BIOS into the system, you should install Windows Vista KB 937500.

To verify if KB937500 is installed properly,

1. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
2. Find Programs and Features and click. If this option does not exist on the window, choose Classic View to find it.
3. On Tasks pane, click on View installed updates.
4. Verify that KB937500 is included in the list of installed updates.

Installation instructions
Notes:

* If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section.
* You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack.
* If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
* Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

Attention:
Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
Manual update

1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the target computer.
3. Start Windows Vista 32-bit or XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer.
4. Double-click 7yuj07us.exe to extract it to your hard drive. The default location is C:DRIVERSFLASH7yuj07us.exe
5. For Windows Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run...
For Windows XP, click Start, then click Run....
6. Specify WINUPTP.EXE with the full path name where you saved the package, then click OK. Example: C:DRIVERSFLASH7yuj07usWINUPTP.EXE
7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
8. Select Update ThinkPad BIOS and follow the instructions on the screen.
9. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message Flash Update has been successfully completed.... Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.

Unattended update

Note:
This procedure is intended only for system administrators. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.

* Refer to the Manual Update section, and download and extract the files.
* At the command line, execute WINUPTP.EXE with the -S option.
Example: C:DRIVERSFLASH7yuj07usWINUPTP -s

To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package.

Initializing the BIOS
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
5. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
6. Select Yes.
7. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
8. Select Yes.
9. Restart the computer.

Notes:

* After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

BIOS information
Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the and the the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.

The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the BIOS and others. (When Intel Turbo Memory is installed in your system, conventional memory addresses are reserved 11 Kbytes more.)

* C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
* D0000-D2FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*a)
* DE000-DF7FF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*b)
* E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Notes:
*a: This area becomes free by disabling the Ethernet LAN Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.
*b: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Option ROM option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable booting from USB device and other USB BIOS features.
Usable Area

The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.

* D3000-DDFFF
* DF800-DFFFF

Notes:

* Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
