BIOS Update (Bootable CD) - ThinkPad T400, R400 IEEE 1394 model

BIOS Update (Bootable CD) - ThinkPad T400, R400 IEEE 1394 model

This System Program Service Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller (EC) program) stored in the system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following systems:
- ThinkPad R400 (IEEE 1394 models)*1
- ThinkPad T400

*1: Applicable for models spcified in the Supported systems list.

The following operating systems are supported:
- Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit
- Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional)

Notes:
- This package is compiled into an ISO format, which is compatible with CD writing software such as RecordNow!(*), and writable to a CD-R or a CD-RW disc.
- If your RecordNow! CD writing program does not have a "Burn Image" entry, please upgrade RecordNow!
- This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

Notes

* You should install the CD/DVD/BD writing software which supports CD/DVD/BD creation function from the ISO image file to create the BIOS Update CD.
* You should have a USB, Ultrabay Slim or Ultrabay Enhanced optical drive to boot the computer from the BIOS Update CD. Any types of PC Card, CardBus PC Card or ExpressCard optical drive are not supported.
* To boot the computer from the BIOS Update CD, you may need to change the boot device setting in your ThinkPad computer. Refer to the Prepare boot device section in this document.
* The contents of the BIOS Update CD can not be shown by Windows Explorer.
* If you use Windows Vista, before applying this BIOS into the system, you should install Windows Vista KB 937500.

To verify if KB937500 is installed properly,

1. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
2. Find Programs and Features and click. If this option does not exist on the window, choose Classic View to find it.
3. On Tasks pane, click on View installed updates.
4. Verify that KB937500 is included in the list of installed updates.

* (Limitation) The computer with the Integrated Smart Card Reader is unable to resuming normal operation from standby mode after hot-docking to the Docking Station which has a hard drive with a hard disk password installed.

Creating the BIOS update disc

NOTES:

* In order to enable the BIOS update by booting the computer from the CD-R/CD-RW disc, it is necessary to prepare the CD-R/CD-RW writing software, such as RecordNow! writing software. If your version of RecordNow! does not have a Burn Image entry, upgrade RecordNow!
* The CD-R/CD-RW disc for the BIOS update does not support any optical disc drives connected through USB devices, PC Cards, CardBus cards or installed into the Ultrabay of the Docking Station. It only supports internal CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD Combo and DVD Multi drives on the ThinkPad systems.
* To boot the computer from an internal optical disc drive, your ThinkPad computer may need to change the boot device setting. Refer to the Prepare boot device section in this document.

This section provides instructions using the RecordNow! program to make a bootable CD. Please refer to your other product manuals when using other CD writing programs.

1. Make sure you have a ThinkPad system with a CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD combo, DVD or BD multidrive installed and a blank CD/DVD/BD disc.
2. Start Windows Vista, XP and logon with administrative privileges.
3. Download the ISO file.
4. For Windows Vista, click Start, then click Start Search.
For Windows XP, click Start, then click Run...
5. Specify the path where you downloaded the file, then click OK. RecordNow! or the default recording software will open. Example: C:temp7uuj12uc.iso
6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Prepare the boot device
The resulting CD-R or CD-RW disc includes an operating system and is bootable on the supported ThinkPad models.

Note: The System Program Service Utility bootable CD supports only the ThinkPad Ultrabay Optical Disc Drive in the ThinkPad Ultrabay. (Not in the Docking Station Ultra bay)

Please confirm that an Optical Disc Drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup.

1. Power off the computer.
2. Power on the computer.
3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Choose Startup from the menu.
5. Choose Boot from the menu. Note the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
6. In Boot Priority Order, make sure USB CD (for the USB optical drives) or ATAPI CD0 (for the Ultrabay Slim or Ultrabay Enhanced optical drives) is on top of ATA HDD0.
7. Press the F3 key to exit, or press the F10 key to save the new setup and then select Yes.
8. Restart the computer.

Update the BIOS
Notes:

* If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section.
* You need an AC adapter, a charged battery pack and an either of internal CD-RW, CD-RW & DVD Combo or DVD Multi drive for ThinkPad to to update the BIOS.
* If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
* Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

Attention:
Do not turn off, suspend the computer or remove the BIOS UPDATE CD until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

1. Print these instructions or display on another system.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the target computer.
3. Make sure your ThinkPad computer has an optical drive installed.
4. Insert the BIOS Update CD into the drive and turn on the computer.
5. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information.
6. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
7. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen.
8. After the information panel appears, remove the BIOS Update CD in the drive then press the Enter key to restart the system.


Initializing the BIOS
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
5. Select Yes.
6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
7. Select Yes.
8. Restart the computer.

Notes:

* After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

BIOS information
Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the and the the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
5. Turn off the computer.

Memory map information
Reserved area

The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the BIOS and others. (When Intel Turbo Memory is installed in your system, conventional memory addresses are reserved 11 Kbytes more.)

* C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
* D0000-D2FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet

* DE000-DF7FF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*b)
* E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Notes:
*a: This area becomes free by disabling the Ethernet LAN Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.
*b: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Option ROM option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable booting from USB device and other USB BIOS features.
Usable area

The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.

* D3000-DDFFF
* DF800-DFFFF

Note:
Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
